Mahamed Rajah


 

Professional background and experience:

Prof Mahamed Rajah’s qualifications include a BA Hons, an MA and DPLR. Mahamed is a Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR, UK) accredited commercial mediator, coach and assessor. He was trained at the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) in the UK.

Mahamed was an Associate Professor at the UNISA Graduate School of Business Leadership, lecturing in Labour Law, Negotiation and Conflict Management, Industrial Relations and Dispute Resolution (1980 – 2016). Mahamed has conducted training in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Namibia, Eritrea. Mahamed has extensive experience as a bargaining forum chairperson, facilitator, mediator, arbitrator, trainer and relationship-building facilitator.


He was also a consultant trainer for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Swiss project to train the Department of Labour’s staff. He is a Mediation Training Institute International (MTI) certified consultant in workplace mediation. He served as a judge at the ICC international mediation competition in Paris.

Mahamed has served as an editor of the South African Journal of Labour Relations and has published several articles and research reports.

Mediation experience and style: 

Mahamed has more than 30 years experience in Labour Relations and Dispute Resolution as an academic and practitioner. His preferred mediation style is facilitative. He is, however, comfortable adapting to evaluative, narrative and transformative mediation styles, depending on the dispute, and the parties involved. The majority of the mediations that Mahamed has worked on involve labour disputes, followed by commercial, community and workplace disputes.

Facilitation experience and style: 

Mahamed has more than three decades of experience as a facilitator. He very often is called on to facilitate bargaining forum meetings. Mahamed is a highly skilled facilitator often adapting a hybrid process including Mediation, Relationship by Objectives (RBO) and Participlan.

Chairing enquiries and investigations experience: 

Mahamed is a part-time Senior Commissioner at the CCMA and is also on the CCMA collective bargaining panel. He also conducts dispute resolution processes for the Transnet Bargaining Council. He has worked for more than three decades in the labour and employment arena and has extensive experience as an independent chairperson of internal disciplinary hearings.
